AFACT’s Farmer Voices program effectively trains producers to inform consumers
Helping farmers connect from the heart with the consumer – that is the goal of the Farmer Voices program hosted by American Farmers for the Advancement and Conservation of Technology (AFACT). The first phase of Farmer Voices was held July 20-22, 2010, in Owatonna, Minnesota.
NutriDense announces Web Moo.0 Contest winners
In June, BASF's NutriDense launched the Web Moo.0 Contest to find out how the dairy industry was using social media.

The grand prize winner is Ashley Messing, a fifth-generation dairy producer in Michigan who agvocates on her personal blog Dairy Innovation, Facebook and @armessing Twitter account.
Profound productivity in Pennsylvania
DeLaval organized a Profound Productivity Tour featuring parlors and herd management in Pennsylvania, July 7-9. The tour started out in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where dairy producers gathered together to learn more about the equipment, herd management tools and aftermarket products they would see over the next two days.
Magic Valley dairy producers attend annual rafting trip
Several dairy producers from the Magic Valley area of Idaho attended the annual rafting trip July 8-10 in Salmon, Idaho. Jami Gaver, owner of Rocky Mountain Pharmaceuticals, hosted the event at his home in Salmon. Carl Billhimer, a sales representative for Novartis Animal Health, sponsored the event on behalf of the company.
Cow Camp provides youth three days of dairy activities
Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, hosted 55 dairy enthusaists for Cow Camp. The three-day event, which began July 8, was sponsored by the California Junior Holstein Association. With the help of Dr. Stan Henderson, Mr. Rich Silacci and California Holstein Secretary Kate Briggs, educational focus was on the sales and promotion end of the Holstein industry.
Conservation tillage silage corn production expanding in California’s San Joaquin Valley
California’s San Joaquin Valley is home to several of the most productive dairy counties in the nation. During the past six years in this region, tillage practices associated with winter wheat and triticale and summer silage corn have undergone major changes by dairy producers using conservation tillage (CT) approaches.

1110pd_ontrop_1There’s a well-known Bob Dylan song that you’ve all probably heard called “Blowin’ in the Wind.” It’s a famous song that has blown right into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and was ranked No. 14 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

The song asks a series of questions and answers them by simply singing, “The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.”

New Technology: New foam block offers early intervention for hoof care PDF Print E-mail

1110pd_holter_nt_2What do you get when you cross a hoof with superglue and a neon-colored hoof block? A new, short-term fix for treating mild hoof sores, say hoof trimmers who have used Shoof International’s Walkease hoof block.

“It’s a great, temporary fix for when you want to get her off her claw for a short period of time to let it heal,” says Brandon Beavers, owner of Beavers Hoof Care Service in Lebanon, Kentucky. “I use them anywhere from five to 10 times a week.”

Students obtain “hands-on” experience through summer dairy program PDF Print E-mail

Another problem that often occurs with heat and humidity stress is an elevation in the somatic cell count of the herd. Below are some suggestions for reducing these summer stress responses of your cows.

1. Ask your nutritionist to check your rations for changes that will help maintain intake and milk production.
Also check to be sure your cows are receiving adequate levels of vitamins A and E, and selenium.

His manure application business covers most of Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota, passing over thousands of miles of highway each year.

The business hauls for 210 farmers annually and applies manure, or a portion of it, from farms of 40 to 2,000 acres.
