1. How many words should my article be?
Most articles appearing in Progressive Dairy Publishing’s four magazines range between 500 to 1,200 words.

2. How much do you pay authors?
We pay on-publication and per piece. We purchase first, exclusive North American rights. Article payment is determined on an individual basis and depends upon the length, topic and timeliness of the submission and the author’s experience.

3. Do I need to provide photos with my submission?
Feature articles about producers will require photos. The freelance author will be responsible for obtaining or coordinating these photos and their publication rights.

4. What type of article or query interests you most?
Feature articles about producers and unique or trend-setting ways they manage their operations.

5. If my article is accepted, when will I be paid?
Authors are paid upon publication. Allow two to three weeks after an article is published for payment to arrive.

6. Do I need to submit an invoice with my story?
No, Progressive Dairy Publishing does not require an invoice for completed freelance work. However, if the freelancer prefers to submit an invoice for their own records, send invoices to Managing Editor Walt Cooley.

7. How will I be assigned stories?
Editors review freelance queries and send assignments and deadlines directly to freelance authors. As story opportunities present themselves, editors will assign dependable freelancers to write an article without a query. If interested in this opportunity, please talk to an editor.

8. Do you have writers’ guidelines?
Yes, freelancers should follow AP style and strictly observe guidelines from editors. References to product names or services are strongly discouraged. Consult an editor before including such references.
