This year marks the 25th anniversary of the World’s Forage Analysis Superbowl, an event that was started in 1983 by the AgSource Cooperative (Wisconsin DHI Cooperative), DairyBusiness Communications (Holstein World), University of Wisconsin Extension and World Dairy Expo.
Since that time, it’s become a cornerstone contest for dairy producers who attend the show each year, providing them with a venue to showcase many of the technological advances in forage management. It’s also allowed producers a rare opportunity to see hundreds of samples of forages – and to determine which varieties might work best in their own operations.
Last year alone, nearly 180 entries from 22 states competed for top honors in six separate categories – dairy hay, dairy haylage, standard dairy corn silage (non-BMR), dairy corn silage (BMR), commercial hay and baleage.
The event provides growers from across the U.S. and Canada an opportunity to vie for awards by entering their high-quality samples in a dairy or commercial division. Dairy samples are judged on lab analysis (60%), visual judging (20%), herd production information (10%) and calculated milk per ton (10%). Commercial entries are judged on lab analysis (70%) and visual judging (30%).
In conjunction with the contest, a seminar stage, located in the Arena Building, features experts discussing the latest in forage and nutrition research.
